Bareos is a fork of the open source Bacula project, specifically based on version 5.2. In 2010, Bacula community developer Marco van Wieringen began maintaining a separate branch that gathered community contributions which had been rejected or overlooked, and this branch ultimately formed the foundation of Bareos. Since then, Bareos has been extended with numerous additional features while preserving compatibility with the capabilities of open source Bacula.

The software incorporates many functions that Bacula Systems chose not to include, including support for easily backing up mobile clients over the internet in addition to systems on local LAN or WAN networks. Positioned within the Data Recovery Software category, Bareos documents its heritage and community involvement by acknowledging the original Bacula author, Kern Sibbald, and all contributors to Bacula and its documentation, and by maintaining a list of contributors to both Bacula (up to the fork) and Bareos in its AUTHORS file.
