selena.comThe Singapore Eye LEsioN Analyzer (SELENA/SELENA+) is an AI-driven system that evaluates retinal images using deep learning to identify three key eye conditions: diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. It was created through collaboration between the National University of Singapore School of Computing and the Singapore Eye Research Institute, with support from IHiS, as part of a Health Care Software approach to automated retinal analysis.
Diabetic patients typically have annual retinal photographs taken to check for diabetic eye disease, which can cause blindness if not detected and treated in time. With SELENA+, these routine eye scans are interpreted by the system instead of a human grader. Research conducted so far indicates that this AI image reader operates more quickly while achieving accuracy comparable to human experts. As nationwide deployment progresses over the next two years, patients are expected to receive eye screening results within minutes rather than waiting about a day.
